Shekudo is a women’s apparel brand that was established in Sydney, Australia, in the beginning. The brand drew inspiration from heritage, life experiences, and a wearable art aesthetic. Shoes and handbags are included. Now that Akudo Iheakanwa is the sole creative director of the company, it has expanded into footwear and accessories and moved its base across the Indian Ocean to commence manufacturing in Lagos, Nigeria.
In just one year, the number of artisans has increased from four to fourteen. The company’s goal in making this change was to attract greater attention to the local artisan and craftsmanship sector while also incorporating some of the time-honored skills and underutilized local resources into the brand’s signature modern design approach.Shekudo takes great pride in being a socially responsible brand that is driven by the empowerment of women.
As part of this mission, the company works diligently to ensure that the majority of its raw materials can be sourced or produced locally (such as its shoe heels, recycled insoles, remnant leather, and linen), and it also strives to employ the majority of its team members who are women.Shekudo wants to create a global sisterhood by encouraging a sense of compassion, empowerment, and celebration among women all over the world. This will enable Shekudo’s wearers to push boundaries, stand out, and know that the Shekudo item they are wearing is created in a responsible manner and can be traced back to its beginnings.
