The Harlem Candle Co. is a high-end home fragrance company that draws its inspiration from the city of Harlem. The Harlem Candle Company was established in 2014 by travel and lifestyle specialist Teri Johnson, who wanted to combine her passions for fragrance, jazz, and Harlem.
Teri’s love of travel and scent began with her favorite aunt’s collection of exotic perfumes and stories from around the world when she was a little girl. She learned the power of aroma and its capacity to take you to another time and place as she traveled to approximately 70 different nations.
Teri, originally from Texas, settled down in Harlem, a district of New York City.
She dug deep into the archives and uncovered the colorful history of Harlem. She was motivated to tell these tales by the vibrant communities of Sugar Hill and Lenox Avenue in Harlem, as well as by musical legends like Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington who played at the Savoy Ballroom.
Her 2014 kitchen was the birthplace of the Harlem Candle Co. Teri now works with acclaimed perfumers to create a line of exquisitely fragrant candles in homage to the Harlem Renaissance.
