Joe Casely-Hayford OBE (1956-2019) was more than just a designer; he was a visionary cultural force whose work irrevocably shaped international style for the 21st century. His four-decade career was defined by a relentless drive to challenge conventions and create a unique, forward-thinking aesthetic that continues to influence the global fashion landscape today.
What made Joe Casely-Hayford truly stand out was his masterful ability to push the boundaries and fuse seemingly disparate worlds. He pioneered the dynamic intersection between impeccable tailoring and raw streetwear, blending the polish of the establishment with the rebellious spirit of punk. This constant negotiation between tradition and subversion forged a unique ‘handwriting’ that not only defined his eponymous brand but also carved out crucial space for a new generation of designers unafraid to mix high and low culture.
Early in his career, Joe quickly earned an iconic status within the creative scene, dressing influential musicians like The Clash and U2. Simultaneously, he built his own menswear and womenswear brand into a global presence, showcasing his collections on the prestigious runways of Paris, Tokyo, and London. His designs became a uniform for creatives and individuals who valued intelligent design and effortless cool.
Joe’s impact extended to Britain’s most historic institutions. He took on the role of Creative Director at Gieves & Hawkes, where his modern sensibility contributed significantly to the repositioning of the venerable 200-year-old Savile Row house, injecting it with contemporary relevance while honoring its rich heritage.
In a powerful act of creative synergy, Joe launched the Casely-Hayford brand in 2009 alongside his son, Charlie Casely-Hayford, and his wife, Maria. This collaboration, spanning generations and talents, cemented a family legacy in fashion. The brand’s success was highlighted in 2018 with the opening of its flagship store on London’s chic Chiltern Street.
The torch of the Casely-Hayford House is now powerfully carried by Charlie Casely-Hayford. Having been immersed in design from a young age, Charlie’s apprenticeship in his father’s studio was foundational. It provided him with an invaluable education in design, the history of menswear, and crucial technical skills, long before he formally studied at the renowned Saint Martin’s.
Charlie began his professional career in fashion at just 21, establishing himself as a notable stylist for international musicians, ranging from the atmospheric UK band The xx to American hip-hop artist Nas.
Today, the Casely-Hayford brand, helmed by Charlie, enjoys an impressive international following, dressing contemporary cultural icons like musicians Mos Def and Drake, and actors Cillian Murphy and Chiwetel Ejiofor. From its flagship store in Marylebone, London, the Casely-Hayford House continues to offer a bold and distinctive new handwriting of modern British style—one that honors the pioneering spirit of its founder while constantly evolving for the future.
