Exploring History: An Inside Look at CAAM’s Research Library

For decades, the California African American Museum (CAAM) has been more than a museum; it has been a keeper of stories. At the heart of this mission lies the CAAM Research Library, a comprehensive and invaluable resource dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history and culture of African Americans.

Established in 1981, the library has grown into a vast archive, housing more than 6,000 books, periodicals, records, and pieces of ephemera. This non-circulating collection is a living history, with materials dating back to the museum’s very beginnings. It serves as an essential hub for students, scholars, historians, and anyone with a passion for learning.

Our collection offers a deep dive into diverse topics, from the arts and politics to social movements and daily life. It’s a space where you can connect directly with the past—touching historical documents, poring over vintage periodicals, and immersing yourself in a world of knowledge that isn’t available anywhere else.

We are committed to making these resources accessible to all, and to that end, we are excited to announce that the Research Library is currently undergoing a renovation. This temporary closure is a necessary step to upgrade our facilities and better preserve our precious collection for future generations. We look forward to welcoming you back to a new and improved space where you can continue to explore, discover, and be inspired.

Stay tuned for updates on our reopening, and thank you for your patience as we work to enhance this vital resource.
