The beauty industry is a multi-billion dollar world of endless products and trends, but for many years, it was a world of rigid rules and limited options. It was a space where “one-size-fits-all” was the unspoken standard, and many people, particularly women of color, felt overlooked and underrepresented. That’s why the story of The Lip Bar isn’t just about makeup; it’s about a movement to redefine beauty, challenge norms, and empower every individual to feel beautiful in their own skin.
A Bold Idea Born from Frustration
The Lip Bar’s journey began not in a corporate boardroom, but in the kitchen of our founder, Melissa Butler. While working a demanding job on Wall Street, Melissa became increasingly frustrated by the lack of diversity and inclusivity in the beauty market. She was tired of the limited color palettes, the toxic chemicals in most formulas, and the idea that beauty had a singular, narrow definition. So, she took matters into her own hands.
Starting in her Brooklyn kitchen, Melissa began to mix and create her own vegan, cruelty-free lip products. Her philosophy was simple yet radical: to create a line of cosmetics that celebrated every complexion and allowed for true self-expression. She believed that makeup should be fun, effortless, and, most importantly, for everyone.
The Infamous Shark Tank Rejection
Many people know The Lip Bar’s story because of its unforgettable appearance on the hit show Shark Tank. In 2015, Melissa and her Creative Director, Rosco Spears, pitched their revolutionary idea to the Sharks. What followed was a moment that has since become a legendary lesson in perseverance. The Sharks were not only unimpressed, but one of them famously told Melissa to “not waste your time” on the colorful, unconventional lipsticks.
This rejection could have been the end of the story. Instead, it was just the beginning. Melissa and Rosco took the criticism not as a defeat, but as fuel for their fire. The TV exposure, despite being a “No,” brought The Lip Bar a flood of new customers who saw exactly what the Sharks didn’t: a brand with a powerful message and incredible products.
Building an Empire, One Lipstick at a Time
Following the Shark Tank episode, The Lip Bar’s momentum grew exponentially. Melissa leveraged her business background and her passion for the brand to secure a major partnership with Target in 2018. This was a monumental moment, as it brought The Lip Bar’s message of inclusive and accessible beauty to a national audience. From there, the brand continued to expand, earning a presence in stores like Walmart and its own flagship store in Detroit.
Today, The Lip Bar is more than just lipstick. Our product line has grown to include a full range of high-quality, vegan, and cruelty-free makeup. From our best-selling “Fast Face” collection, which simplifies your makeup routine with multi-use products, to our liquid matte lipsticks, we are committed to making beauty easy and effortless.
Our Unwavering Mission
At its core, The Lip Bar’s mission has remained the same since those early days in Melissa’s kitchen: to challenge the beauty standard. We believe that there is no one way to be beautiful, and our brand is a testament to that belief. We celebrate bold colors, diverse skin tones, and the freedom to express yourself exactly as you are.
Every product we create is designed with our community in mind—products that are not only high-performing but also good for you and the planet. We are proud to be a Black-owned business that has paved the way for other entrepreneurs and has proven that authenticity, resilience, and a powerful mission can triumph over any obstacle.
Thank you for being a part of our journey. Whether you’ve been with us since our Shark Tank days or are just discovering us now, we invite you to join the movement. We are The Lip Bar, and we’re here to prove that a little color can change the world.
