This is a wonderful, inspiring story! To make it a better and longer website blog post, I will expand on Mignon’s personal journey, deepen the connection to the community and faith, and elaborate on the mission and products.
Every great business starts with a need, but few begin with such a powerful blend of desperation, faith, and sheer ingenuity. Our story begins in 2008 with our founder, Mignon Francois. Mignon wasn’t dreaming of starting a national bakery empire; she simply set out to do one essential thing—help make ends meet for her family.
Mignon’s approach to life is simple: “follow your spirit.” One week, facing a difficult financial decision, Mignon took the last $5 she had for dinner and poured it, quite literally, into an idea. From that meager investment, she developed a recipe for success that has blossomed into a destination bakery, serving a loving community and selling over 5 million cupcakes to date.
With no capital, no prior professional baking experience, and no formal business training, Mignon achieved the near-impossible. She didn’t rely on a blueprint; she relied on her palate and her persistence. She developed an iconic, unforgettable flavor that immediately drew long lines and intense attention to her kitchen in Nashville’s hip Historic Germantown neighborhood. The success wasn’t just about selling a treat; it was about injecting a new, vibrant energy into the local landscape.
The story took an even more personal and profound turn in 2015. Inspired to bring the brand back to the city that raised her and to honor the strong women who came before her, Mignon began the work of expanding The Cupcake Collection to her hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana.
This homecoming began humbly, through a series of beloved pop-up shops, allowing the flavor of the family’s Louisiana heritage to reconnect with its roots. This culminated in 2017 with the exciting opening of our first New Orleans brick-and-mortar location on the historic Magazine Street in the city’s Garden District. This expansion symbolizes more than just growth—it’s a celebration of heritage, family, and the power of returning home.
As first-generation Black business owners, the success of The Cupcake Collection carries a profound responsibility. We are committed to carrying the torch of teaching entrepreneurship and leading by example. Our journey—starting with five dollars and zero experience—serves as a powerful, real-world lesson for other first-generation entrepreneurs seeking their own path to success.
Our Mission is clear: The Cupcake Collection exists to be a lighthouse in the community. We aim to demonstrate what good, ethical business looks like, serving to light the way for others so they know what they can achieve if they believe in their vision.
At The Cupcake Collection, we aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel—we are just trying to do classic things well. We extend a daily invitation to everyone to find out what’s #SoYamGood about our sweet contribution to the local communities where we exist and to the broader small business economy.
The heart of our business is found in our kitchen, where every flavor pays homage to our family’s Louisiana heritage.
We rise early to prepare the sweet treats featured daily, crafting them exactly the way our family has come to love them. Because we would never dream of offering our personal guests anything less than we would offer family, that’s precisely the high standard we maintain.
We use premium ingredients and avoid unnecessary artificiality. Our extensive offerings include:
Our family legacy is deeply grounded in Faith. It is the source from which our joy and success stream. Having a dedicated time set aside each week to worship together is a tradition that goes back as far as we can trace in our lineage.
Keeping this tradition alive is what we believe has been a cornerstone and a pillar upon which we have built our stability and success. Therefore, we proudly remain closed on Saturdays to honor our family and our faith.
The Cupcake Collection operates with a spirit of giving that is truly at the core of our business model. We believe in pouring back into the community that supports us and helps keep the lights on in our cupcake shops.
Each year, our commitment is centered around three areas that have personally touched and impacted our family’s lives:
In this vein, we are committed to actively supporting and collaborating with local organizations that serve in these vital areas, ensuring our success fuels the health and prosperity of our neighbors.
