Our journey began in 1881, founded as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary with a profound commitment to educating Black women. This early institution laid the groundwork for what we are today. By 1924, in recognition of our expanding mission and impact, we officially became Spelman College. Today, Spelman stands as a globally recognized leader in the education of women of African descent, continually upholding a legacy of academic rigor and social responsibility.

Our commitment to excellence is nationally recognized and rigorously maintained. Spelman College is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). We also take immense pride in our role as a vital member of the esteemed Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUCC), a collaborative partnership that further enhances the educational and cultural resources available to our students.
