Nzingas Kitchen is more than just a restaurant—it’s a culinary homecoming, a vibrant part of the historic Hayti District of Durham, and a true labor of love from Owner and Executive Chef Zuri Hester.
Chef Zuri Hester is a proud Durham native whose roots run deep in the Bull City. Her journey from local student to celebrated chef is a testament to her passion for food and community. She is a graduate of Hillside High and earned her undergraduate degree in Hospitality & Tourism from North Carolina Central University (NCCU). Driven to refine her craft, she pursued formal culinary training at the esteemed Johnson & Wales University.
Upon returning home, Zuri took a leap of faith and, at the age of just 25, opened her first venture in 2014, originally called Nzingas Breakfast Cafe on the South Side of Durham. It quickly evolved into Nzingas Kitchen, reflecting a broader, more ambitious menu that captured the hearts and taste buds of the city.
Nzingas Kitchen is built on a simple yet profound hope: to create a safe space where people can enjoy some of the best eats Durham has to offer. The menu is a delightful fusion of brunch, soul food, and Creole-inspired dishes, setting it apart as a true hidden gem.
While the name has evolved, the commitment to spectacular breakfast and brunch remains, with customer favorites that have earned rave reviews:
Located at 826 Fayetteville St. Suite 110, Nzingas Kitchen has become known for its flavorful dishes, generous portions, and truly excellent customer service. The commitment to delicious food and creating a sense of belonging has made it a celebrated landmark in the community for over a decade.
