More Than a Shade: How Nubian Skin Redefined “Nude” for Everyone

The concept of “nude” is a staple in fashion, yet for too long, it was defined by a narrow and exclusionary standard. Nubian Skin was born from a simple but powerful realization: “My nude isn’t the nude I see in shops.” This frustration, shared by countless women of color who faced a frustrating lack of skin-tone hosiery and lingerie, led founder Ade Hassan to create a solution. She decided it was time for “a different kind of nude.”

A Movement of Innovation

Frustrated by the limited choices available, Ade Hassan launched Nubian Skin in 2014 with a carefully curated collection of essential lingerie and hosiery. This wasn’t just about selling underwear; it was an act of innovation that would resonate far beyond the brand itself. By challenging the status quo and “redefining nude” to be more inclusive, Nubian Skin had a massive impact on the fashion industry. Our mission inspired countless other brands to recognize the need for diversity, forcing the industry to finally catch up.

The success of this mission is reflected in the incredible milestones we’ve achieved. We’ve been featured in numerous major fashion and non-fashion publications, and our products have provided the essential underpinnings for major productions on the West End and Broadway. Perhaps most notably, we were honored to be selected to supply the wardrobe for Beyoncé’s Formation World Tour, a testament to the quality and relevance of our brand.

A Legacy of Empowerment

Ade Hassan’s dedication to her mission has earned her widespread recognition. In 2016, she was honored with the Great British Entrepreneur Award for her work. The following year, her commitment to redefining nude and her profound impact on the fashion industry were recognized with an even greater honor: she was awarded an MBE at Buckingham Palace for services to fashion.

Ade has also shared her inspirational journey with the world, including a TEDx Talk in 2019 where she spoke about the reality of achieving a goal and how Nubian Skin came to be.

Most recently, in 2022, we collaborated with The Royal Marsden to launch the UK’s first Softie Breast Forms specifically designed for mastectomy patients of color. This initiative goes to the very heart of our mission: empowering women by providing products that truly meet their needs, regardless of their skin tone.

We are so grateful for your patience and support as we continue to grow and shape the future of Nubian Skin. Our story is still being written, but our commitment remains the same: to empower women and celebrate every color.
