Located in the historic Morehead Hill neighborhood, the manor is a stunning, 8,000-square-foot Colonial Revival-style mansion originally built around 1910 for a tobacco company executive. The Edwards have worked tirelessly to preserve its unique historic charm, weaving their personal touches into every detail, from the furnishings and luxurious décor to the signature art collection that can be found from the ceilings to the floors. Daniel’s natural flair for design has made the home a visually stunning retreat. Guests are also welcomed with personal touches that define the experience, such as complimentary beverages, scrumptious homemade desserts, and the comfort of the signature Morehead Manor robe.

Meet the Dynamic Duo: Innkeepers Monica & Daniel Edwards

The Edwards bring a remarkable depth of experience and community dedication to their roles, making them not just innkeepers, but true staples of the Durham community. Both are proud alumni of North Carolina Central University (NCCU), grounding their business deeply in the local culture.

• Monica Edwards: A native North Carolinian, Monica is the expert on all things hospitality and manages the inn’s day-to-day operations. Before becoming an innkeeper, she excelled in accounting, human resources, and trust tax. Her commitment extends far beyond the manor; she has served as President of the North Carolina Bed and Breakfast Inns Association (NCBBI) and as the Chair of the Tourism and Development Authority (governing board of Discover Durham). Her leadership on both local and national levels, including service on the Advisory Board for the Professional Association of Innkeepers International (PAII), highlights her dedication to the industry.
• Daniel Edwards: A Newark, NJ, native, Daniel is renowned for his culinary skills, particularly his highly sought-after, award-winning carrot cake. Daniel served the people of Durham for 30 years, retiring as a Police Captain with expertise that includes hostage negotiations—truly bringing a new meaning to the phrase “Protect and Serve.” Now, in addition to his innkeeper duties, he serves as an instructor in the Criminal Justice Department at NCCU and is the Owner/CEO of his consulting company, Critical Perceptions. He is also a certified Executive Life Coach and a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.

The Rest of the Innkeeping Staff

During your stay, you may be greeted by two other very important, and slightly furrier, members of the Morehead Manor innkeeping staff: Georgia and Shambé. These Siamese hosts are known for their beauty, intelligence, and vocal input, providing excellent, if sometimes demanding, company! Siamese cats are often considered hypoallergenic due to their short, fine fur. However, should you have any sensitivities, for your comfort, they can be restricted to the innkeepers’ private quarters. Simply let the Edwards know your preference!
