She tried everything, from drugstore brands to luxury counters, but all failed to meet the challenge of truly inclusive beauty.

Instead of feeling defeated, Chichi saw an opportunity. She was inspired by the rebellious spirit and regal beauty of the African kingdoms—the queens, rulers, and rebels who honored beauty through innovative, soulful techniques. She knew that the beauty industry was fundamentally flawed, expecting consumers to change to fit the products, rather than the other way around. With just $2,000, she started selling makeup tools to build capital for her true dream: creating makeup that was designed with dark skin tones in mind.

The Nubian Palette: A Viral Revolution

In 2016, she launched her first product, The Nubian eyeshadow palette. Inspired by Queen Nefertiti, it featured a range of warm, highly pigmented neutral shades. It was an instant viral sensation. People of all skin tones were captivated by the formula’s rich color payoff and blendability. It was proof that a brand created with Black women at the forefront could resonate with everyone. The Nubian wasn’t just a product; it was a statement.

Following its explosive success, Juvia’s Place continued to release a series of iconic palettes like The Zulu, The Warrior, and The Masquerade, each a celebration of African culture and color. These palettes shattered the industry’s unspoken rule that bright, bold colors wouldn’t sell. They proved that there was a massive, untapped market hungry for creativity, culture, and color.
