Dr. Derrick J. Beech is a distinguished Surgical Oncologist and the founder of Cancer Treatment Specialist, PC, where he serves as President and CEO. With over two decades in academic medicine, Dr. Beech has dedicated his career to expanding access to high-quality cancer care, particularly for historically underserved communities. His mission is to combat global inequalities in cancer prevention, treatment, and survival.
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Beech earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Duke University. He then went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
Driven by a strong interest in cancer surgery and compassionate patient care, he completed his surgical residency at Temple University Hospital and Clinics in Philadelphia. Following his residency, he pursued a highly specialized fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the renowned M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Beech has held numerous prestigious leadership roles throughout his career. He has served as a faculty surgical oncologist at Tulane University and the University of Tennessee at Memphis, where he was Chief of Surgical Oncology and Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs. He also held the position of Professor and Chairman of Surgery at Meharry Medical College and Chief of Surgery at Nashville General Hospital.
Most recently, he served as Chief of Surgery at Phoenix Indian Medical Center, overseeing surgical services for Native Americans in Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. Additionally, he was a member of the executive leadership team at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, serving as the national Chair of Surgery. Before founding his professional corporation, he was a Professor of Surgery and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta.
Dr. Beech is a respected figure in surgical oncology, with an extensive list of published manuscripts, book chapters, and abstracts. He has also delivered more than 100 presentations and served as a visiting professor at numerous leading institutions. His research focuses on cancer prevention and control, novel gene therapies for cancer, and large-scale clinical trials with an emphasis on breast, sarcoma, and colorectal cancers. His work also includes coordinating prostate cancer prevention programs and expanding research into global cancer health disparities and health equity.
Dr. Beech’s commitment to excellence is reflected in his many honors, including membership in the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He is also a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Beech’s ultimate goal is to provide cancer patients with “what they need, when they need it, in the amounts needed,” driving forward the mission of global health equity.
