Every great brand is born from a genuine problem. For us, that problem was the glaring gap in the skincare market that left millions of men of color without products specifically formulated for their needs. This is the story of how that frustration led to the creation of Ceylon Skincare.

The Struggle: When Skincare Fails Pigmented Skin

Our founder, Patrick, didn’t set out to start a skincare company—he was simply a man searching for relief. Like many men with melanin-rich skin, he routinely battled common, chronic issues:

  • Acne and Inflammation: Persistent breakouts that left behind lasting marks.
  • Hyperpigmentation: The dark spots and uneven tone that are a defining feature of post-inflammatory scarring (PIH) in darker skin.
  • Razor Bumps (Pseudofolliculitis Barbae): Painful, recurring irritation caused by shaving.

His personal skin struggles were amplified when he moved to Mainland China for a demanding job with the U.S. State Department. The combination of intense professional stress and the challenging environmental conditions—specifically the extensive air and water pollution in a bustling city—made keeping his skin clear and healthy nearly impossible. He experienced daily breakouts and a cycle of routine acne scarring that no product seemed capable of breaking.

The Glaring Void: A Frustrating Discovery

Patrick tried hundreds of products—from luxury brands to specialized treatments—but nothing truly cleared his skin without causing new problems. The core issue became obvious: The mainstream skincare industry was not designed for him.

He discovered a painful truth: virtually no products specifically catered to men with melanin in their skin or those from different ethnic backgrounds. Worse yet, many of the readily available products contained harsh substances that could either strip the skin, bleach it unevenly, or leave it dry and unprotected from the elements, worsening conditions like hyperpigmentation.

This was more than just a lack of options; it was a feeling of being overlooked and underserved by an industry that profits from all consumers. Frustrated with this systemic void, Patrick decided to stop searching for a solution and start building one. He set out to create a company dedicated to providing the best possible, effective, and safe skincare products for men of color worldwide.

🌿 Why the Name Ceylon? Shifting a Legacy

Our brand name is not a coincidence; it’s an intentional choice with historical, scientific, and cultural weight.

The heart of our original, essential formulations lies in Ceylon Tea, otherwise known as Black Tea. We incorporate this potent ingredient for its remarkable properties:

  • Antioxidant Power: Black tea is rich in antioxidants, helping to protect skin cells from environmental damage.
  • Healing & Repair: It is known to aid skin healing and reduce the impact of sun damage, which is crucial for preventing the darkening of scars and hyperpigmentation in pigmented skin.

Our manufacturer sourced this natural ingredient directly from suppliers in Sri Lanka, the country that originally exported it and made it globally famous.

While Sri Lanka is an incredibly diverse nation with a rich and remarkable history, “Ceylon” is also seen by some as a negative reference to the colonial era. In borrowing this name, we hope to shift the narrative and be part of a new, positive legacy.

By incorporating this key ingredient and acknowledging its origins, we are connecting our modern, science-backed formulations with a heritage of natural healing.
