After graduating, she completed a rigorous general surgery residency at Grady Memorial Hospital, one of the busiest Level I trauma centers in the Southeast. Komen-sponsored Breast Fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

At the top-ranked cancer center in the nation, she was exposed to a wealth of advanced techniques in breast surgical oncology, including oncoplastics and cutting-edge cancer research. This fellowship solidified her expertise in a truly multidisciplinary model of care. The approach, which she champions to this day, integrates primary care, medical oncology, radiation oncology, plastic surgery, and pathology to create a single, cohesive, and patient-centered plan: “One patient, One place, One plan!”

Dr. Spencer’s commitment extends far beyond the operating room. While at MD Anderson, she further developed her passion for promoting breast cancer awareness through community outreach, advocacy, and education, a key component of her Susan G. Komen fellowship. Today, she offers 100% breast services to women, men, and adolescents. Her peers have recognized her exceptional work, awarding her the ASCO National Diversity in Oncology Award in 2009 and naming her a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in 2024.
